Not All Ants Are the Same β Treatment Has to Match the Species
Most people think an ant problem is an ant problem. It's not. Different ant species require completely different treatment approaches. What works on odorous house ants won't work on carpenter ants. Using the wrong product in the wrong location can actually make the problem worse by causing the colony to split and spread.
We identify the species first, then apply the right treatment in the right places to eliminate the colony β not just the foraging trail you can see.
Ant Species We Treat
Carpenter Ants
The most destructive ant species in the NY/NJ area. Carpenter ants don't eat wood β they excavate it to build nests, causing structural damage similar to termites. They're large (up to 5/8 inch), black or red-black, and are most active at night. Seeing them indoors β especially large ones β is a serious warning sign.
Odorous House Ants
Tiny, dark brown ants that smell like rotting coconut when crushed. They form massive colonies and are extremely persistent. They nest in walls, under flooring, and in crawl spaces, and their foraging trails can seem never-ending. Baiting is the most effective approach.
Pavement Ants
Common in urban areas, they nest under slabs, sidewalks, and foundations. They enter homes through cracks in foundations and along utility lines. Often seen in summer moving soil between pavement cracks.
Little Black Ants
Small, shiny black ants that nest in decaying wood and soil. They're opportunistic feeders and will invade kitchens quickly once they find a food source.
Fire Ants
Increasingly present in the NY/NJ area. Aggressive, sting painfully, and build large mounds in lawns and open areas. A medical concern for people with allergies.
Why Killing the Trail Isn't Enough
Spraying the ants you see on the counter kills the foragers β but the queen and the colony keep producing more. Effective ant control requires getting a slow-acting bait product back to the nest, where it eliminates the colony at its source. We know which products and placement strategies work for each species.
Snap a clear photo of the ant β size and color help us identify the species before we arrive. A carpenter ant requires a very different treatment than an odorous house ant.
Carpenter Ant Warning: If you're seeing large black ants inside your home β especially during winter or early spring β this often indicates an established indoor nest. Don't ignore it. Carpenter ant damage is real and gets worse over time.
π Monthly Maintenance Service
For properties with persistent ant pressure β especially those near wooded areas, gardens, or with older wood structures β a monthly maintenance program keeps colonies from re-establishing throughout the active season.
- Regular perimeter treatment to intercept foragers before they get inside
- Monitoring for carpenter ant activity in wood structures
- Bait station maintenance and replenishment
- Seasonal adjustments as ant pressure changes
